You can vote in the upcoming state elections even if you live outside of India. In order to vote, Indian citizens living in other countries must follow certain rules.
You can still vote in the upcoming state elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana if you live outside India. Here is a guideline for NRIs who want to cast their vote.
In order to vote, Indian citizens living in other countries must follow certain rules. According to the ECI, an overseas/NRI voter is “a citizen of India who is absent from the country owing to employment, education, etc.” and who “has not acquired citizenship…of any other country and is otherwise eligible to be registered as a voter at the address mentioned in they’re passport.”
How to register as an NRI voter:
1. The initial step is to complete the enrollment form. The NRI must file an application on the prescribed Form 6A with the electoral registration officer of the constituency in which the NRI’s Indian residence is indicated on their passport.
2. When completing Form 6A, the individual must upload a copy of their passport as well as any other required documents, such as a visa.
3. The form can be completed online, or it can be downloaded from the ECI website. Forms are also available free of charge for Indian missions.
4. The application must be accompanied by self-attested copies of all relevant documents. While enclosing documents in the form, the following must be submitted: One recent passport-size color photo, as well as self-attested photocopies of the relevant passport pages containing the valid visa endorsement
5. Prospective voters must file all of these documents either in person with the registration officer or by mail to the office. The necessary documents can also be filed on the website of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer/Election Commission of India.
6. If the application is mailed, each photocopy must be attested. If the application is made in person, the original passport must be presented for verification.
7. If the documents must be mailed, the address of the respective electoral district officer can be found on the Election Commission of India’s website or the Chief Election Officer of that state. The link to the state-specific officers’ websites is available on the Election Commission of India’s main website.
8. After reviewing all of the documents provided, the decision on whether or not to include the NRI’s name on the electoral roll will be made. Prospective voters will receive this via postal mail as well as SMS. The electoral rolls are also made available on the website of the Chief Election Officer of the state, accessible to all.
Form 8 can be amended if there are any errors on the electoral roll.
